How Indian Students Can Pursue the US CPA

This blog will provide information on how Indian students can obtain the internationally recognized US CPA credential. It will cover details such as eligibility, steps to acquire the license, and how to pursue the course in India.

Did you know that the demand for accountants is projected to increase by 6% annually until 2028? Due to this trend, many Indian candidates prefer to pursue the US CPA course instead of the highly in-demand CA course. The US CPA course, which stands for Certified Public Accountant, is a widely recognized and respected credential. One frequently asked question is whether non-US or non-Canadian citizens can pursue this course, and the answer is a resounding yes.

To be eligible for the US CPA course, there are certain criteria to be fulfilled, which are as follows:

  • To be eligible for the US CPA course, aspirants must have a total of 120 credits in the Commerce field. CPA course providers in India offer comprehensive courses to fulfill the eligibility criteria.
  • As per US standards, each year of study in India is considered 30 credits per year.
  • A bachelor’s degree in India is typically three years long, providing a maximum of 90 credits, which is insufficient to pursue the US CPA course.
  • In addition to a bachelor’s degree, students need to have a post-graduate or master’s degree or be a member of ICAI or the Institute of Company Secretaries of India to obtain a total credit score of 120.
  • Each state in the US has a different eligibility procedure, with an average score requirement of 120 credits, and some states requiring a total of 150 credits.
  • To determine your eligibility, consult our counselors who will be happy to assist you in making the right decision.
  • The CPA course details and fees vary depending on the state and institution providing the course.

Therefore, it is crucial to understand CPA course eligibility criteria before applying for the course.

The application process for the Indian aspirants is as follows:

Before delving into the application process, it is important to gain an understanding of the two crucial institutions associated with the US CPA course.

  • The AICPA (American Institute of Certified Public Accountants) is the largest association representing the accounting profession worldwide.
  • The NASBA (National Association of State Boards of Accountancy) is the governing body of all State Boards in the United States.
  • The 55 states in the US have different boards with varying policies for application and licensing.
  • The NASBA is considered the “motherboard” of all State Boards in the US, providing an overarching framework for the process of applying for the US CPA license.

Indian students can take the CPA Exam in India at one of the prometric centers across the country, making it easier for them to obtain the credential.

The steps that all Indian students must follow are as follows:

  • The first step in applying for the US CPA course is to obtain transcripts from the candidate’s university.
  • Once the transcripts are obtained, they need to be sent to the US for evaluation.
  • The transcripts must be sent to NASBA or WES (World Education Services), or another recognized evaluation agency.
  • Out of the 55 US jurisdictions, 53 accept NASBA’s evaluation of transcripts.
  • Candidates who are certain of the jurisdiction they wish to apply for can do so directly through NASBA.
  • However, candidates who are unsure of the jurisdiction can avail of the help of NASBA’s undecided jurisdiction service.
  • NASBA evaluates the transcripts and sends them to three jurisdictions based on the candidate’s credits, and the candidate can select one jurisdiction out of the three for the application.
